Random packing – Pall rings, Raschig rings, saddle rings, Tellerettes and hollow balls – is tower packing in metal, plastic and ceramic, in sizes from 16 to 76 mm.
Small rings, saddles or balls that are poured loosely into a column. Liquid and gas meet on their surfaces. Simple, robust and low-cost.
Choose This Product When
- You need packing for a desulphurisation, drying or cooling tower
- You need packing for a gas scrubber or purification tower
- Your system is dirty or fouling (Tellerette or cascade mini rings)

Product Description
Random packing is mainly used as tower packing in the petrochemical, chemical and fertiliser industries, in towers such as desulphurisation towers, drying towers and cooling towers. It is available in metal, plastic (polypropylene) and ceramic, in sizes from 16 to 76 mm.
Metal Pall rings, plastic random packing in polypropylene, and ceramic packing are all available.
How It Works
The pieces are poured into the column and settle in a random pattern, leaving many open spaces. Liquid trickles down over their surfaces while gas rises through the gaps, so the two meet over a large area.
Metal packing suits high capacity and high temperatures. Plastic packing suits corrosive services at lower temperatures. Ceramic packing suits high temperatures and most acids.
Features
- Metal, plastic and ceramic
- Sizes from 16 to 76 mm

Frequently Asked Questions
Which types of packing are used in distillation columns?
Structured packing (wire gauze or perforated plate) gives high efficiency and low pressure drop. Random packing (rings and saddles) is robust, economical and handles high liquid loads well.
What is the difference between a Pall ring and a Raschig ring?
A Pall ring has windows in the wall, which gives higher capacity and efficiency. A Raschig ring is a simple ring at lower cost.
Metal, plastic or ceramic?
Metal for high temperatures and strength, plastic (PP) for corrosive service at moderate temperatures, and ceramic for acids and high temperatures.
Which size should I choose?
Sizes range from 16 to 76 mm. Larger packing gives more capacity and lower pressure drop; smaller packing gives higher efficiency.
